CanSkate Program Overview

CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program and the foundation for all ice sports in Canada. Designed for beginners of all ages, it provides a fun, safe, and engaging environment to develop essential skating skills. Whether your goal is to enjoy skating as a recreational activity, or to move on to figure skating, hockey, speed skating, or ringette, CanSkate gives you the tools to succeed.

Led by NCCP-trained coaches, the program uses a nationally standardized curriculum focused on balance, control, and agility. Skaters progress through six skill stages, earning badges and ribbons as they achieve milestones. Each session incorporates music, games, and challenges to keep learning exciting and motivating.

Highlights of CanSkate:

  • For all ages and abilities
  • Focused on developing strong basic skills that support all ice sports
  • Fun, interactive sessions with music and upbeat activities
  • Progress tracked with Skate Canada badges and ribbons
  • Taught by trained professional coaches and supported by qualified program assistants

CanSkate is the first step to a lifetime of skating enjoyment and opens the door to future opportunities in figure skating and beyond.

Equipment Required

To ensure safety and comfort on the ice, all skaters must have the following:

Mandatory Equipment:

  • CSA-Approved Hockey Helmet - required for all skaters up to and including CanSkate Stage 5, regardless of age.
  • Skates - well-fitting hockey or figure skates
  • Warm Clothing – comfortable, layered clothing that allows for movement
  • Gloves or Mittens – to keep hands warm and protected

Optional:

  • Thin, warm socks - not thick bulky socks for better fit and comfort in skates
  • Knee pads or elbow pads - for extra protection, especially for beginners

CanSkate Stages

The CanSkate program is divided into six stages, each building on the skills learned in the previous level. Skaters work through skills in three main areas: Balance, Control, and Agility. Within each stage, skaters earn ribbons as they master specific skills, and once all ribbons are achieved, they receive a badge to mark their completion of that stage.

See below for each Stage and it's required skills:

CanSkate Refund Policy

Due to the age and readiness of CanSkate participants, refunds will be considered during the first three weeks of the program. If parents choose to withdraw their child due to age/readiness, the club will reimburse the entire fee less $70. After four weeks, no refunds will be issued.
